Public Relations Group Honors Five At Conference

The Maine Public Relations Council (MPRC) honored five individuals at its Annual Conference on October 16 in South Portland.

Russ Donahue, Marketing Director for St. Mary’s Health System, received the Edward L. Bernays Award, in recognition of his contributions to the public relations profession and his service to the community.

“Russ has been active in Maine’s public relations community for 23 years,” said award presenter Dan Marois, a Bernays recipient in 2006. “He has worked to increase the stature, ethics, and standards of the profession in many capacities including significant leadership service to MPRC.”

The award, created in 1987 to honor outstanding contributions, is named for Edward L. Bernays, widely regarded as the father of modern public relations.

Meg Baxter, President of the United Way of Greater Portland, was honored with the 2008 MPRC Lightship Award, presented to an individual outside the public relations field. Recipients are recognized for their ability to interact and successfully communicate with the public and the media.

John Lamb received the 2008 President’s Award, in recognition for service to MPRC and its president. Lamb is a Communications Manager at Maine Medical Center.

Alisa Conroy and Nancy Fendler were recognized for earning their Accreditation in Public Relations (APR). Conroy is Vice President of Strategy and a Partner at The SOAP Group in Portland. Fendler is Founding Partner of Fendler Communications in Yarmouth.

Accreditation in Public Relations is a voluntary certification program administered by the Universal Accreditation Board, a partnership of nine public relations organizations from across the United States and Pueto Rico. The APR examination process includes review of the candidate’s professional accomplishments and understanding of ethical issues, and a rigorous examination.

Now in its 33rd year, the Maine Public Relations Council is a professional association of Maine public relations practitioners. MPRC is dedicated to the professional development of its members and a greater awareness of the role of public relations in the world today.
